A Slope Side Update from Scott

Our friend Scott wanted to share an update from the slope of Eldora Mountain Resort, where he has been carving up the mountainside. Through the Ignite Adaptive Sports Program, Scott has been going up to Eldora a couple times each ski season, using a sit ski. This last time he went up, however, we changed things up a bit. One of Scott’s major goals for this last year has been to increase his stability and stamina while standing or walking. He practices standing and walking exercises both at home and while attending classes at Imagine!’s CORE\Labor Source. So upon discussing this, Scott and the team decided to try out an A-Frame support stand for Scott to use on the slopes. It gives him plenty of assistance to bear his weight as needed, and as you can see in the video below, Scott had no troubles sailing off into the sunset. Stay tuned for more updates, and special thanks to the Ignite Adaptive Sports program at Eldora.

An Update from Gerald

Gerald, who accepts services from Imagine!, shared some photos from a recent visit that he made to the Emergency Medical Services Training Program at the Community College of Aurora. This was the first training facility for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) students in North America.

First responders training center at the Community College of Aurora.

Here is an impressive display of first responder badges from around Colorado, and other States.

 This is the Crisis Management room where first responders would meet to discuss a plan of action if Colorado were to need a large action plan (such as New York Needed during 9/11).

Some of the simulated environments where EMT's are trained occur in a simulated bar (one of the most common places requiring an ambulance), on street corners, and in the home.

Imagine! ASD Program: Request for Registrations

The annual enrollment date for the 3-year Autism Spectrum Disorders Program at Imagine! is July 1. Now is the time to register your child to be considered for July enrollment.

The ASD Program is for Boulder County residents between the ages of 3 and *26 who live at home with their parents, who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and who are NOT eligible for other services through Imagine! If your child already receives services such as Grants through the Family Support Services Program (FSSP) at Imagine!, s/he would not be considered for the ASD Program.

*The upper age limit has been raised from 22 to 26: older individuals may request an exemption from the criteria of living at home with their parents.

To register your son or daughter:
  • Please visit www.imaginefamilyservices.org to register online for the ASD Program. You will receive an email confirmation;
  • You will receive an Intake Application packet in the mail from Imagine!’s Intake Case Managers. You must complete this application for services at Imagine! in order to remain on the wait list for the ASD Program;
  • Colorado has broadened the eligibility criteria for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities services. Some families who register for the ASD Program may learn that their child qualifies for other services at Imagine! rather than for the ASD Program.
  • Please send the following supporting documents to the ASD Program Coordinator at Imagine!:
  1. Your child’s most recent medical diagnosis, signed by a psychiatrist, physician or psychologist who specializes in autism spectrum disorders;
  2. Your child’s current IEP.
The ASD Program enrolls 20 children each July from the registration wait list. Funds for therapeutic services are for 3 years: $5,000 year 1, $3,500 year 2, and $2,000 year 3 (final year).

This is a family-directed program in which therapeutic services are ordered from the ASD Program’s web store to match an individuals approved 3 Year ASD Plan.

Contact Lucy Williams, ASD Program Coordinator by telephone at 303-926-6444, or by email at lwilliams@imaginecolorado.org.

Happy Birthday Johnny

Here’s a video of the Rusk family (Kristen, Serena, Isabelle, and Jason) celebrating Johnny's birthday. Johnny lives at Imagine!'s Bob and Judy Charles SmartHome. The Rusk family has been volunteering at the house for about a year now and have become a vital part of the residents' lives. They usually come in once a week to play games with the residents and bring smiles to the house. Every time a resident celebrates his or her birthday, they bring in a cake and/or ice cream for all the residents and a very nice gift for them (they are extremely generous!). For his birthday, Johnny received a nice Bingo game for his gift (one of his favorite games).

We thank the Rusks for their commitment and support! Below are a few more pictures from Johnny’s celebration.

Imagine! Excellence in Customer Service Award for March 2016

Congratulations are in order for Heather Sabo, who works for the Imagine! Foundation, on being selected as the March 2016 recipient of the Imagine! Excellence in Customer Service Award.

Here is some information from Heather’s nomination, submitted by Imagine! Foundation Executive Director Patti Micklin, which ably demonstrates why she was selected as this month’s recipient:

I have worked with Heather for the past few years as she organizes auction items that will raise proceeds for the annual Imagine! Celebration. Each year I gain a better understanding and a new appreciation of the level of effort and coordination that Heather invests into Imagine! and this event. Heather is so organized and creative with the process of securing auction items, and each year her efforts are more apparent. This year I was witness to her level of coordination and the process she relies on to make everything run smoothly on the day of the event. She has every detail in order and a process to ensure that things are in order from start to finish! Heather dedicates so much to the Imagine! Celebration and it is clear that she has a real commitment to Imagine! and the people who are supported through the funds raised at this event!

Great work, Heather, and congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
